About the font Karben Mono

While designing Karben 105 and 205, it occurred to me that such an even font where the letterforms are based on a lozenge form, would adapt well to a monospaced variety.

Monospaced or fixed-width fonts were first designed for typewriters where the carriage advanced the same distance after each character. 

Nowadays, they tend to be used for tabulated data, technical manuals and in computer programming to distinguish code from natural language text. They’re also used in scripts for screen and stageplays apparently, where the fixed width makes it possible to easily determine the length of the production.

I’ve created two variations of Talbot Type Karben Mono, one for each of the Karben 105 and Karben 205 fonts. 

I liked the challenge of trying to design characters of such variable width, (compare i and m for example), to appear visually balanced in a fixed width font. It’s always going to create a slightly odd result, but odd in a good way.
